Dental treatment for nervous patients in Hampton Wick

Many people feel slightly anxious about seeing the dentist, but for others, the thought of a dental appointment is distressing or even terrifying.

If you have a dental anxiety, you may experience exaggerated fears and worries about seeing your dentist. As the appointment draws near you may become nervous and even lose sleep.

A dental phobia is a more serious condition where patients experience more than unfounded worries. You will be completely petrified and panic stricken about seeing your dentist. You may feel sick or even be sick or feel like crying.

Reasons for dental anxiety or dental phobia

People develop dental anxieties or phobias for different reasons:

Pain– Many patients are worried that about the fear of pain. Perhaps you had a bad experience in the past or you have an unfounded fear about what might happen.

Loss of control– Just like a fear of flying, you may be anxious about seeing the dentist because you cannot control the situation and this causes anxiety.

Negative Experience– If you had a painful or frightening experience at the dentist in the past, you may have awful memories. The sounds, smells and thoughts of the dental surgery can be terrifying.

How we can help nervous dental patients

If left untreated, dental anxieties and dental phobias can become worse. This is especially the case if you are in pain or have a problem with your teeth. It becomes a cycle where you are too scared to visit the dentist and so the pain becomes worse which in turn can lead to greater anxiety.

The first step to breaking this cycle is to visit a dental practice and talk to people in the team. All of the staff at Smile Rooms Kingston, from the receptionists through to the dental team are friendly, approachable and welcoming. We recommend that you book an appointment just to come in and talk to us and tell us how you feel.

Our dental team are specially trained to deal with nervous patients and our priority is to put you at ease. You do not even need to sit in the chair at this appointment.

Sedation for dental treatment in Hampton Wick

Sedation can be given to help you relax during dental procedures. It can be used for a simple teeth cleaning process or for more complex procedures such as dental implants or the removal of a tooth. Sedation is lighter and safer than anaesthetic, so whilst you will be awake during your treatment, you will feel drowsy and calm. You will not feel anxious or frightened.

How does it work?

A sedative drug is given to you at the dental surgery which will take effect almost immediately. This will make you feel drowsy and relaxed, but you will still be awake and able to follow requests. Your blood pressure, pulse and oxygen levels will be monitored throughout. Generally, most patients find that taking a sedative is a pleasant experience.

You will be able to walk and leave the dental surgery after your treatment, but you should have a chaperone to accompany you.
